Roll of Honour - World War I

The elaborate Honour Roll of 1918 to commemorate x-pupils who fought in the great war is now installed in the Newcastle Interchange. It is now located on the former site of Wickham Railway Station.

This was collaboration with Newcastle City Council, New South Wales Government and the Great Lifestyle of Wickham network. It was dedicated in a ceremony at the Interchange in November 2017.

Wickham Superior Public School

The school was opened in 1880 with an enrolment of 600 students. Public instruction became compulsory.

In 1881 Wickham made a Superior Public School.

In 1892 the enrolment was 1168 and it was the largest enrolment outside of Sydney.

In 1906 the now known, significant heritage school was occupied.

The World War I Project

Great Lifesytle Of  Wickham the Inner City Wine makers and community, with the Newcastle Design School and Newcastle Library celebrated the installation of WW1 Wickham Superior School Honor Roll.

GLOW negotiated with Newcastle stakeholders for 6 years to bring Wickham Superiors School WW1 memorial back to the public.

The WW1 marble Honour Roll  was constructed by local stonemasonry firm Meldrum and Markey and funded by the parents and community of Newcastle.

The WW1 Roll has a crest comprising of an Australian Military Forces badge with supporting Kangaroo and Emu. The years '1914' and '1919' are centred within laurel wreaths. Two vertical turned marble columns adorn the left and right sides, enhancing the design.

Great Lifestyle of Wickham  GLOW brought this project to the reality partnered with Newcastle Museum, Newcastle Council, Newcastle Library and Bronwyn Law local consulting Historian.

Wickham Interchange now features the unique piece of Newcastle’s local history.

The Wickham World War I Honour Roll was originally installed at Wickham Superior Public School in 1918 as a memorial to the school’s 326 staff and students who served in the war.

The marble and granite structure – that weighs in at 1.2 tonnes – was donated to Newcastle Museum following the 1989 earthquake.

It remained on display there until 2008 when the museum was relocated to Honeysuckle, when the memorial was moved into storage.

The memorial was delivered in 48 pieces and installed by a specialist team of stonemasons on the main concourse. "We will remember them"
